The LTE eNodeB has the user’s IP packets, and it sends some packets directly to the user on the LTE air interface and forwards some packets directly to the Wi-Fi access point.

The Wi-Fi access point sends the packets to the mobile device using Wi-Fi technology on the unlicensed band.

When a user is in an area that has both cellular coverage and Wi-Fi coverage, parallel transmission using:

a. LTE on licensed spectrum and

b. Wi-Fi on unlicensed spectrum can be carried out to significantly increase throughput for the user.
