NFV(Network Function Virtualization) defines an approach to run Network Functions as software applications in a virtualized environment on general purpose hardware. With NFV, the network functions are developed as stand-alone software applications called Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs). They are designed to run on a general purpose off-the-shelf hardware platform.
Traditionally, the network functions have been implemented as integrated products supplied by equipment vendors. The vendor supplies the full package- specialized hardware, operating system and software applications. The software only works with the vendor’s proprietary purpose-built hardware.
Motivation for NFV
Today’s network is primarily built with equipment from multiple vendors and purpose built hardware dedicated to a specific function. Consequently, managing and scaling the capacity for the needed performance is one of the key operational challenges. The vision of network virtualization is to look at these network functions in a new light with virtualization in mind to help with these operational challenges.
NFV relies on virtualization. However, removing the dependency on vendor-specific hardware is a great benefit in terms of CapEx savings. The NFV infrastructure (NFVI) has an elastic computing function that enables dynamic allocation of resources, if desired, for specific functions. The ultimate benefit is delivery of agile services by a platform or network cloud equally as agile, to accommodate the services’ needs. This enables dynamic expansion of capacity and simplifies network functions.
